BRICS-Pakistan question is floating in the air of
international politics with some prospects and reservations from its rivals
since the country has formally applied for its membership in November, 2023.
However, the relations of Pakistan with BRICS nations which is the group of
major fast growing economies comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South
Africa, is multifaceted and currently in a state of flux.
However, here are some points that describe potentially
important for Pakistan being member of the Bloc.
Pakistan's Interests in BRICS:
Growing Geopolitical influence of the Bloc:
BRICS has introduced itself as the leading voice of Global
South and as a counterweight to the established Western-led international order.
Pakistan, like many other developing countries, is interested
in joining BRICS platform to secure its geopolitical interests as well as to
play a role to shape emerging global order.
Economic Benefits:
Pakistan is hoping to reap economic benefits from BRICS members
as it is already engaged with China in this regard. Membership of BRICS can
expand sphere of its trade and investment with BRICS nations. These nations combinedly
own 29 percent of the world’s GDP with its new entrants which amounts over $30
trillion.
Multilateralism:
Pakistan’s policy of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence
entails that BRICS can promote inclusive multilateralism. This would give
developing countries a greater say in global decision-making as majority of the
states wish to see the world and United Nations more open and democratic.
Challenges to Pakistan's membership:
Indian Opposition:
India is the key member of BRICS. it has historically opposed
Pakistan's membership due to their long-standing rivalry.
This presents a major obstacle to Pakistan's bid as India stands
among the founders of this bloc and its opinion will be taken seriously.
However, Russia and China could play major role for Pakistan’s
membership in BRICS. Both India and Pakistan were made part of Shanghai Cooperation
Organization (SCO) by the same states.
Economic Standing of Pakistan:
Pakistan's major obstacle in joining the bloc would be its
economic condition. Most of the BRIC’S members are economically strong, and
some are emerging as world’s major economic giants.
Pakistan is unable to contribute to the bloc with its current
economic capabilities.
Internal Dynamics of BRICS:
BRICS is not a monolithic entity. Apparently, this seems to
be anti-west bloc due to China and Russia being its key members. But few of its
members are having their own dynamics, like, India enjoys strategic partnership
with United States. It has unresolved border clashes with China. Saudi Arabia
which has formally joined the bloc this year after some conspiracies of leaving
the membership has remained an ally of United States.
Future Prospects:
The future of Pakistan's BRICS membership is vogue but not
uncertain. This would be dependent upon several factors, including India's stance
and its plea, its economic performance, and the internal dynamics of BRICS already
have.
However, here are some points that might pave the way for its
membership:
- Pakistan has remained important country for key global players throughout the course of time due to its geostrategic position. It is obvious to both China and Russia. Pakistan needs to expedite its plea in this respect.
- Improving economic performance, diversifying its economy and focus on infrastructure development is crucial for Pakistan. The economic foes of the country have grown due to political instability and frequent military takeovers in the past. Its leaders and other key stakeholders should realize this issue and devise an economic charter that may not be overthrown at any cost.
- The Nye’s concept of Soft Power is cannot be ignored in modern while formulating internal and external policies. Demonstrating regional peace and stability, the government in Pakistan requires to introduce the country as democratic, peaceful and terrorism free. So, India may not highlight this point to weaken the stance of Pakistan’s membership of BRICS.
- Some analysts also believe that Pakistan's chances of joining BRICS will increase if it can improve its ties with India. Dialogue and diplomacy can play a vital role in addressing issues and building trust. While India on its part should accept Pakistan’s ideological boundaries so a constructive dialogue could be initiated.
- Promoting shared interests with all the key stakeholders of BRICS is another key aspect for grabbing the membership. The bloc has already adopted inclusive policy of expansion. Pakistan’s geographical location, its role in geopolitics and standing on several international issues can alone provide basis for the country being part of the bloc.
